Prachi Youth Social Organisation (PYSO) came into being in 1991–92, formed by a group of educated young people who wanted to do social good in their own locality. In the initial years they undertook development work unsystematically, but their good intentions produced immediate results and unqualified support from the local population.
Encouraged by this response, they decided to make the programme more widespread. To make their activities more visible and acceptable, the organisation was registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Act of XXI). Subsequently, to gain access to overseas funding, it was also registered under FCRA 1976.
PYSO envisions a society free of discrimination based on caste, class, creed, language, religion or region — where every individual is assured the right to liberty, equality and justice. We aim to empower the powerless, give a voice to the voiceless, and ensure basic minimum rights for the disadvantaged so they can become masters of their own destiny. PYSO gives special emphasis to youth empowerment, gender equality, primary healthcare, education, and local self-governance.

StrategyThe organisation believes in a development model where beneficiaries are treated as part and parcel of the organisation, around which the whole development process revolves — as opposed to a charity model in which beneficiaries are treated as mere recipients of aid.
